Before you submit an application for categories A1, A35KW, or B, you must possess a valid first aid certificate.
Courses can be found under the "first aid courses" section. If you already possess a driver's license for the mentioned categories or if you are a doctor or nurse with a diploma, the course attendance is not necessary.
The validity of the first aid course is six years.
On the application form, the visual acuity must be confirmed by a doctor or optician in Switzerland.
The vision test is valid for two years.
To obtain a learner's category, you must fill out and submit a "learner's driving application". You can submit the application form at the earliest one month before the required minimum age.Lernfahrgesuch Zürich
The theory test can be taken at the earliest one month before reaching the minimum age and is valid for two years. The questions must be answered on a computer.
People who already possess a driver's license for categories A1, A, or B do not have to take the basic theory test.
After passing the theory test and reaching the minimum age, you will be issued a learner's license.
Please note that the validity of the learner's license is limited and cannot be extended or interrupted.
You can apply for a maximum of two learner's licenses of the same category.
If you need a third learner's license of the same category, you must either wait two years or provide a positive traffic psychology suitability examination.
There is no fixed number of hours you have to attend, but it is recommended that you visit a driving school at the start of your practical training. This will help you avoid acquiring bad habits during private practice drives. With the new regulation that requires people under 20 years old to hold a learner's license for one year before being allowed to take the practical test, this is especially important.
Before you can register for the practical driving test for categories A1, A, or B, you must prove that you have attended an 8-hour traffic education course at a driving school.
The proof is valid indefinitely. People who already possess a driver's license for one of these categories are exempt from taking the course. If you want to enroll in traffic education, please contact a driving school in your area.

The practical driving test can be taken at a selected road traffic office in your place of residence canton. You will need a category B car that is capable of driving at least 120 km/h and has an accessible brake from the passenger seat. Make sure the vehicle is properly insured. For example, a Mobility car cannot be used. Please also note that during private practice drives and the practical driving test, if the vehicle has an electronic parking brake, it must remain applied and cannot be suddenly released, for example, by pressing the accelerator pedal, during the drive. In general, we recommend that you go to the test with a driving instructor.
